Inspiration for the New Year (and Decade)

Cheer’s to the New Year & Decade! May it be your BEST one yet!

karly-santiago-79Ut1cRYoQ0-unsplash

No matter where you are today or what you may be thinking, today symbolizes a fresh new start and opportunity. Today is the FIRST Monday of not only the year, but of the new decade! We could sit and grumble over the fact that it’s “Monday”, but let’s face it…we all need to look outside of the box from time to time and see things from another perspective. I’m here to offer just that and a bit of inspiration to boot!

anika-huizinga-RmzR87vTiYw-unsplash

Whether you’re smashing your new year goals so far without the slightest bit of hesitation or grimace or you’re in serious need of a pick-me-up and ready to throw in the towel. You’re not alone!

Everyone has their own specific and personal goals in mind for what they’re bringing to this new chapter in their life and once again (the new decade). Hey, that’s pretty exciting stuff and you should be excited about it, too!

If there is one thing I love, it is to bring inspiration and cheer to others. No, I may not be able to say that I have walked in your shoes or felt what you’ve felt, but empathy is not lost on me and I, too, have had my share of grief in this life.

So cheer up, Momma!  You’re going to kick ass in this new season of your life & make your dreams come true!

There is so much beauty in your life and though it may be hard to see it now, the storms will begin to clear and the sun will come out again! Take heart in knowing you aren’t alone in your troubles or fears and you’re truly blessed to wake to see another day. Yes, your life is probably sometimes a crazy mess, but in the end you will see all of your beautifully broken pieces mended together in a masterpiece!

It’s okay to take time and just breathe. Just be in the moment and not worry about the things that need to get done. Take time to relax and recharge your batteries and indulge in self-care. Because that is so very important to making everything else fall into place.

Practical Tips for Thriving as an Introverted Mom

I have been a mother for nearly 12 years and I have learned so much about myself during these years. However, I have always known that I was introverted. That was never a doubt or question in my mind. Raising my three children (who each have their own unique personality – a mix of future introverts & extroverts) has been extremely enlightening on so many levels.

I grew up being the quiet child that was labeled as shy or weird. I would watch as most of the other children would go on about their day without a care in the world. Laughing as loudly as they wanted without fear of looking silly or obnoxious.

Being an introverted person is different for every introvert and how they interact with the world is just as unique. However, being an introverted mom/parent can be even more challenging to maneuver in today’s society. I don’t mind being introverted. It’s where I draw most of my strength on my ability to inwardly think and process without the disruption of the outside world.

Before I share with you what has worked for me, I’d like to acknowledge that being a mother is wonderful, hard and a never ending learning experience. It doesn’t take away anything from being a mom whether you’re an introverted or extroverted mom.

Whether you are outgoing or more reserved and laid back, moms are constantly being judged no matter where we turn or what we do. I won’t go into detail, but let’s just say we are judged on literally everything! With a fine tooth comb – no less. But, why? No one is perfect and introverts understand this probably better than the rest because we are outside of the box thinkers, dreamers and we can understand and appreciate everyone’s uniqueness, gifts & abilities.

PLAN & EXECUTE YOUR QUIET TIME –   It is so very important as a mom to have time to yourself. We are so busy raising the next generation that we forget we are still living ourselves. On top of that, there is the nagging guilt that if we do take time for ourselves we are somehow not doing our job as a mother of always putting our child first.

Just remember that it is impossible to pour out anything from an empty cup. This tip is “plan & execute” for a reason. Because as mom’s we are so quick to “plan” on taking time for ourselves that we forget to actually “execute” that plan and make it happen.

So, take that time for yourself momma. Go grab some coffee and enjoy a quiet trip in the car or crank up those tunes. Take a long hot bubble bath or read a good book in silence. Just remember to relax. Not think about what you should/could be doing or what are the kids doing… They are being kids and to be brutally honest, they are probably not even thinking about you.. So fill your cup momma! Your kids will benefit from a freshly renewed and relaxed mom, and so will you!

nathan-dumlao-LPRrEJU2GbQ-unsplash

UNDERSTAND YOUR LIMITS –   Don’t let anyone make you feel bad because you’re not constantly running up and down the road taking your child from one fun new adventure to the next. Understanding your limits will help you avoid mommy burnout and more than likely your child will appreciate it as well. Kids need rest, too!

It’s okay to simply enjoy each others company and talk and be silly without the need to compare how someone else is raising their kids or maybe you should be more “fun”…

No! Stop it! You are a fun mom. You are amazing. You do awesome things with your kids and you do them on terms and times when you know you’re able and what’s best for your family!

It’s important to know your limits in life and when to take a break and when to push on further. Once you have a grasp on that and don’t let the voices of others influence you, you will be much happier.

michael-fenton-0ZQ8vojHNuc-unsplash.jpg

LOVE YOURSELF BECAUSE YOU’RE AMAZING –   You’re not perfect. No one is. So, love yourself! So what if you’re a little awkward or shy or don’t want to be the center of attention. You’re still amazing and you have so many wonderful gifts to share with your family and the world. And in your own time when you choose to do so.

Forgive yourself when you fall short or when you try too hard to be a perfectionist. Understand that your flaws are what make you so unique and embrace them completely.

Everyone learns things and copes with things differently. Being an introvert just means that you’re going to do things  differently than other’s. It doesn’t mean you’re doing them wrong or not good enough. You just do things to the beat of your own drum and that’s pretty awesome to me.

Don’t be afraid to stand out and be different. Don’t be afraid to try again when you fall. Each gift, talent and unique ability that you possess is what makes you amazing! Use those every day and you will not only be a better mother for it, but you will be a better person for it. It’s a beautiful thing when you can inspire someone else to let their own unique flame burn bright for the world to see.

cristina-pop-GFqxo947NV4-unsplash.jpg

STOP OVERTHINKING EVERYTHING –   This should be interesting considering that introverts are naturally introspective and in-tune with ourselves. Which means we are often times more prone to overthinking. We seem to know when something is wrong with us even if we can’t pin point exactly what it might be.

We know these things because we have spent so much time thinking over each little detail time and time again. But, sometimes we benefit far more from things and certain situations if we just stop overthinking them.

It’s a hard feat to ask, especially from introspective people. Just think of it as learning something new, because who doesn’t like new things? Call it an experiment or whatever it is that you need to do to take your mind off overthinking things from motherhood, friendships, work or home… Just let it go and simply be in the moment. It’s okay!

william-iven-DfMMzzi3rmg-unsplash.jpg

UNPLUG THE WHOLE FAMILY –    Whether your kids are too small to know what technology is or if you have teenagers whose smartphone has grown into a 6th finger on their hands… Make time for the whole family to unplug and spend some beneficial time together.

It can be so easy to let them play a video game so you can have a moment to yourself and trust me, I am not saying don’t do that. I do that plenty. But, there are times when everyone needs to come together as a family and actually interact with each other… (Cue every teenagers eye rolls…)

Social media and technology today has made some incredible breakthroughs, but it does come at a cost to how we interact with people. Especially how we interact with our family and friends. It’s easier now than ever to be so close to someone and yet so distant. To get wrapped up in comparison or the mindless scrolling and we forget that life isn’t on our smartphone. It is what is happening around us while we are busy looking at our phones.

So, get unplugged and start enjoying the things in life that really matters. Your family, friends and the precious time that you are blessed to be able to spend with them. You would be surprised at just how much time you waste (yes, waste!) on social media… It can be fun and sometimes rewarding to engage with technology. Just don’t forget to live your life!

As an introverted mom, I understand life’s challenges and the uphill battle that is sometimes unavoidable. However, I know how rewarding it can be to embrace who you are and the amazing things life has to offer once you’re comfortable in your own skin. Your spouse, kids, friends and most importantly you will benefit so much more by simply being yourself. Introverted or Extroverted or simply somewhere in between, we are all uniquely wonderful with truly amazing gifts and abilities to share with the world. Are you ready?

How To Stay Focused & Slay Your Goals

Let’s be 100% real for a minute….Time management is an extremely crucial quality to have, and it is really simple to acquire if your goal is truly important to you!

Yes, sometimes things are out of our control completely and it makes it impossible for us to get everything (or maybe even just a couple of things) done that we planned to do. Ugh, I know the struggle!

I am a perfectionist to a fault. Meaning that it is both simultaneously my biggest strength and my greatest weakness. Yes, it will be correct! But, it may be delayed because I will go over and over it again with a fine tooth comb until I am completely satisfied with it.

It isn’t because I think I may have done it wrong, it’s because I am trying to do it better. I am constantly trying to improve on something that I haven’t even “finished” to begin with. Can you relate?

As funny and infuriating that this is to me on a daily basis, I have found certain things that help with focusing while allowing me to complete the task at hand quicker and with less distractions.

Procrastination & Time Management are two things that never work well together!

I often find myself reluctant to begin something simply because I know the amount of pressure that I put on myself with trying to perfect it along the way. So the task becomes paralyzing while I contemplate and overanalyze the infinite amount of ways to complete something, while at the same time sorting through potential solutions to figurative problems to begin with. Sounds crazy, right?  It’s mentally and physically exhausting! And I know I’m not alone!

a-girlbrand-646054-unsplash.jpg

Here are a few steps that I have found help me to stay focused and slay my goals!

1.) Make A List – A simple list. Lets not overcomplicate things by going into too much detail here. Just a simple list of the things you need to do to prevent yourself from becoming overwhelmed by trying to multi-task on too many things. Lists create visual accountability and help create a solution for that annoying problematic feeling of  “What was I doing again? or  “What did I need to be doing?”

Stress happens when you become overwhelmed by trying to do too many things at once.

Lists will prevent this! If you stick with them!

Multi-tasking is something that automatically happens when you get in a situation where you need to do two things at once. Most of the time, this is a relatively easy thing to do. For example, talking on the phone while loading the dishwasher or being able to answer calls and take notes. There are times when multi-tasking is nearly impossible for anyone. (If you say it isn’t, I’d love to watch you listen to two different people tell you two different stories while you simultaneously write down both stories accurately.) It can be impossible. So, prioritizing is imperative…

2.) Do NOT Overcommit!  – As a reformed people pleaser my entire life, I realize the difficulty this step will bring. Will people hate me because I said no? Will they no longer want to be my friend because I last minute backed out of something for my mental health? Will saying no to adding on another task to my plate make my peers think I am not capable of performing my duties to the best of my ability. The answer to all of these questions and many more is a resounding, NO! On the contrary, taking on too many things at once can be counterproductive and cause more problems in the long run.

Other peoples annoyed perspective of you saying no by not wanting to add more stress on yourself and trying to maintain a healthy mental and physical balance in your life, is not your problem. Frankly, it’s theirs and to their detriment…their loss!!

Making sure you keep your plate in life balanced and not overwhelmed is key in being able to  keep things flowing properly. (Checkout this video Netflix – Dead to Me “Saying No” and watch how empowering it is to say NO to shit that you don’t want to do or just can’t mentally or physically allow yourself to take on!)

Saying no does not make you a bad person! And if those people truly care about you then they will understand.

3. Just DO IT! – My least favorite of all, just do it! Why is it my least favorite you ask? Because it calls me out on my BS and forces me to get off the couch and make it happen! You are and always will be your biggest accountability partner. There are no shortcuts to success or no magic pill to lose that extra weight. You have to do it yourself! You have to get up and make it happen! Rain or Shine!

You are your biggest supporter and your worst critic!

The only way to reach your goals is simply by starting! One. Little. Step. And it will add up to your finished goal and you will feel so incredibly proud of yourself. But, it starts by taking that first step. Have you ever noticed how awesome you feel after you finish doing something that you weren’t particularly thrilled about getting up and doing in the first place? Take that past feeling of accomplishment and use it as the needed fuel to take on this next task! You can do it! And I will promise you that it will be worth it!

You are capable of achieving great things in life if you truly believe you can and are willing to put in the long hours and the hard work to make it happen!

a-girlbrand-646026-unsplash

Here are some simple items that I always keep in my home office space for a little mood pick-me-up that makes my inspiration vibes thrive:

1.) My organizer/planner – I have used Erin Condren planners for years & love them!

2.) Cute pens – They really do help inspire you to write and create those lists!

3.) Colorful highlighters – What better way to add color and happiness to those lists?!

4.) Scented hand lotion – Currently alternating the stress relief and focus lotion from BBW.  So relaxing!

5.) Message board or chalkboard – Keep inspiration everywhere in your life!

6.) Candle or wax warmer – I love it when my room smells fresh and inviting!

7.) My favorite book – Whatever inspirational book that I’m reading at the time.

8.) Mints/Gum – Silly, but effective! Try it!

At the end of the day, you and only you truly know what works best for you. Because only you know what is holding you back. Too much social media? Too much TV? Whatever your time sucking vice is, it can be beat and you can slay your goals!

Why Make-Up is an Essential Part of My Life as A Busy Mom

Every day is the same, I wake up and immediately go into the kitchen to make myself a cup of coffee. I long to have a few moments of quiet to reflect on what I need to get done for the day, while enjoying a hot cup of coffee.

Now, does this mean that every day I am successful in this? No. It does not. But, for the most part, I am able to spend some quiet time with my husband and drink half of my coffee before he leaves for work. Shortly thereafter, I hear little feet pitter patter through the living room in search of breakfast to fill their hungry rumbling tummies.

Once I have them preoccupied and my coffee has been reheated and finished, I begin to get myself “ready” for the day. And, yes, for me that begins with make-up! I love the feeling it gives me and I enjoy the process of putting it on. I understand and respect that not everyone likes make-up or can wear make-up, but for me, it’s just as important as my morning coffee.

freestocks-org-209882-unsplash

There is something about the feeling and rush of happiness I get when I gather my make-up bag and brushes and stand in front of my mirror. It isn’t that I think I need make-up and it isn’t about fitting in or any other crazy social stigma that has been placed around make-up. It’s just about my love of color and feeling pretty and the extra boost of confidence it gives me. Plain & simple.

There is a mini process I go through before applying my make-up. Rather typical and normal, but still important. I brush my teeth, then wash my face and moisturize. Then most likely after being interrupted by an argument at the breakfast table, I’ll resume and proceed to brush my hair and pull it back with a hair tie. Now the fun part begins!! ♥

raphael-lovaski-564846-unsplash

After the base of my make-up is on, I feel more awake and confident. As silly as that may sound, it is what it is. When you’re a busy mom of three kids, it really is the little things. Make-up is not an essential must have in order to function in life. However, for me, it is one of those little things that I have chosen to have in my life because it makes me a happy more creative person, and I am okay with that!

Being a Mother is hard and it has its ups and downs, so when you find joy as an individual in something as simple as makeup, or a bookclub, the gym, cooking or trying new foods, then I’d say good for you! It’s important in life to have hobbies and things we really love to do and try. It makes us happier people and in return we are happier mothers! I love make-up, baking and reading inspiring books. I love to lift others up and be a source of inspiration or motivation on any level I can, because that is important to me.

the-girlloop-646010-unsplash.jpg

Make-up for me is an expression, kind of like art. After all, you are putting colors on your face almost as if it were your canvas you show the world. It’s fun and exciting. Something new to try every day. And at the end of a long day when you wash your face, it’s a clean slate for you to try again tomorrow. Just like life.

I have often joked about make-up as putting on my face or refer to it as war paint, but to put it boldly, it does act as a shield of confidence armor for me. Just like a brand new outfit feels or a sassy new hairstyle. It’s also important to find make-up that does not have harsh chemicals so it does not effect your health in any negative way. Now you can enjoy the harmless fun & creativity that make-up can bring into your life.

william-iven-8515-unsplash

As a busy Mother, make-up has given me an outlet of time for myself and the extra confidence to face the day with all of its challenges, the good & the bad. It also brings some color into the equation. Does make-up make me a better Mom? No, I wouldn’t say it like that. It does however make me feel better as a person, and in return I think I am happier and more optimistic. I encourage my children to try new things and be creative and to help others as often as they can. To always be true to yourself no matter what. In return they each have their own uniquely wonderful personalities, and I enjoy watching them blossom daily.

Make-up is a personal choice. It is also personalized to each individual. So, whatever it is that you enjoy doing for yourself, I hope you find joy and happiness! ♥
