7 Sanity Saving Tips for Busy Moms in 2020

Do you ever feel like you’re spinning your wheels and never getting anywhere? You’re not alone! As a busy mom of 3 very active children (One of which is entering her first melodramatic teenage year) I fully understand how we can constantly rush and rush, yet never really achieve what we set out to do each day.

Not that anyone really notices, but we sure as hell bust our ass every day doing the little trivial things that if we did not get done, then the whole shit show would fall apart anyways. Do you see our dilemma? We are constantly running in circles barely getting traction while tiring ourselves out and it needs to stop!

Let’s make this our year to finally get our family life organized and I truly believe it’s possible with some much needed tweaks along the way. Although, I can maybe see hoarding a larger quantity of coffee & dry shampoo while we adjust to some things. (Just my personal tip) Although it may not seem doable most days, it’s still a possibility and I’m running with it…like a toddler trying to escape nap time. We got this!

I have put together a list of some crucial steps that must take place before we can get this “show to the production line” in 2020 and finally have productive and successful days as busy moms!

1. We must start our day as well rested as possible I understand wanting to stay up the night before indulging in every second of silence that we can…believe me, I do! But we are setting ourselves up for complete and utter failure by not resting our minds. Coffee is magical, but not that good! Sleep is vital to this whole operation. With little ones getting sleep can be difficult if not impossible. Incorporate help from family or friends to watch your little bundle of joy so you can catch some much needed Zzzz’s.

2. Give yourself time to get ready for the day FIRST Whether it’s having 30 minutes of silence to enjoy a cup of coffee while the sun rises, or brushing your hair and applying your makeup without having to rush and ultimately stabbing yourself with the mascara wand. Set your alarm to wake you early and allow yourself some extra time to set the tone of your day in a peaceful way. It actually does work very well with step #1!

3. Don’t snap at the first sign of struggle Kids will be kids and they seem to come programmed knowing exactly what buttons to push to trigger your last nerve. So set the morning vibes and don’t back down when the trouble or inevitable bickering amongst siblings starts to ensue. Be strong, Mama! You got this.

4. Sometimes we need to go with the flow Just as important as it is to not snap at the first sign of struggle, it’s also very important to learn to just go with the flow of things. “Picking your battles” is a very real thing with Motherhood. It allows you to not stress yourself out over every little mess or shout (even if you really want to react) it’s best to just pick your battles and go with the flow. You and your children will be much happier for it.

5. Have a routine set in place for the whole family By having a routine set in place, you can help eliminate confusion or too many options for things to not get taken care of. (Example: Have your children clean their plates/bowls from the table after finishing breakfast. Have them lay out their school clothes the night before school to avoid rushing in the mornings. Likewise, lay out your work clothes the night before and enjoy that extra time in the mornings. Sit your trash can out the night before it runs…this is a huge sanity saver! Taking some time to plan and establish a routine of getting things in place will definitely save you and your whole family the headache when time runs short and you will all be glad you did.

6. Understand that things will not always go as planned Even if you plan everything out and have it all done the night before, things can and still do go wrong. Your child wakes up sick and throws up on the way out the door on the morning of your business meeting. Your child tells you the morning of their science project being due that they “forgot” to tell you about. You spill coffee on your brand new outfit, you forget your wallet at home, someone cuts you off in the parking lot stealing your spot and now you have to circle it 27 more times. Life happens and it gives us plenty of opportunities to scream and curse the skies, but we can choose not to. Not that I always take the high road in that department, I am however realizing that taking the high road isn’t just for other people, it’s more importantly for me and my inner peace.

7. Forgive yourself and try again tomorrow There will be days where things are going to go smooth and you snap anyways. You have a moment of weakness and simply snap in the middle of your child starting his story over again for the 89th time because he left out yet another small detail. You’ll feel horrible because of it and ask for forgiveness and of course they forgive you, but ultimately you have to forgive yourself, too. We are all human and most of us try the very best we can to do right by other people in hopes they do the same for us. But, at the end of the day all you can control is how you react and respond and what you’re willing to do different the next time the opportunity presents itself. You are not a failure simply because you fail at something. The world is full of great people who have failed more times than I have even attempted something, but they would never have gotten to where they are if they accepted the mindset of failure. Forgive yourself for your short comings (because we all have them) and pick yourself up and try again tomorrow.

As I always say, life is a journey and a roller coaster one at that. With each high and low comes the same gift, a lesson. Experience in something we gained as a result of having gone through it. Whether good or bad, we are stronger because of it.

Choose to accept that every day is going to have its own set of challenges with ups & downs. As long as you’re doing your part in minimizing the chances of things going crazy by planning, having a routine, remaining calm and going with the flow of things so when life throws you a curve ball (as it will) you can forgive yourself for reacting poorly in the moment of a tough situation and try again tomorrow.

Allow yourself grace and understanding that better days are coming and you will get through all of the tough days just like you have gotten through all of them before that you could not see a way out of or an end in sight. You’re stronger and more capable than you think and you totally got this!

Inspiration for the New Year (and Decade)

Cheer’s to the New Year & Decade! May it be your BEST one yet!

karly-santiago-79Ut1cRYoQ0-unsplash

No matter where you are today or what you may be thinking, today symbolizes a fresh new start and opportunity. Today is the FIRST Monday of not only the year, but of the new decade! We could sit and grumble over the fact that it’s “Monday”, but let’s face it…we all need to look outside of the box from time to time and see things from another perspective. I’m here to offer just that and a bit of inspiration to boot!

anika-huizinga-RmzR87vTiYw-unsplash

Whether you’re smashing your new year goals so far without the slightest bit of hesitation or grimace or you’re in serious need of a pick-me-up and ready to throw in the towel. You’re not alone!

Everyone has their own specific and personal goals in mind for what they’re bringing to this new chapter in their life and once again (the new decade). Hey, that’s pretty exciting stuff and you should be excited about it, too!

If there is one thing I love, it is to bring inspiration and cheer to others. No, I may not be able to say that I have walked in your shoes or felt what you’ve felt, but empathy is not lost on me and I, too, have had my share of grief in this life.

So cheer up, Momma!  You’re going to kick ass in this new season of your life & make your dreams come true!

Whatever the past decade has dealt you, don’t be afraid to reshuffle your deck!

There is so much beauty in your life and though it may be hard to see it now, the storms will begin to clear and the sun will come out again! Take heart in knowing you aren’t alone in your troubles or fears and you’re truly blessed to wake to see another day. Yes, your life is probably sometimes a crazy mess, but in the end you will see all of your beautifully broken pieces mended together in a masterpiece!

It’s okay to take time and just breathe. Just be in the moment and not worry about the things that need to get done. Take time to relax and recharge your batteries and indulge in self-care. Because that is so very important to making everything else fall into place.

“I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re doing something.” —Neil Gaiman

The Lessons I Learned In 2019

The time has come to bid farewell to this year, and what a year it has been. So many wonderful and disastrous things happened almost seeming to go hand in hand. Alas, we have made it to the last few days of the year. Hallelujah!

As we get ready to raise our glass to ring in this New Year, take a moment to reflect on the lessons that 2019 taught you. Although, nothing is perfect or grand in life every single day, there is always something to be taken away from those less than ideal experiences.

chinh-le-duc-S9XD0IZ6iZA-unsplash

Earlier this year I lost my job and although it wasn’t heartbreaking in the least, there were still many lessons it taught me on who my true friends were and who only cared to take advantage of my kindness and generosity. I truly believe that if you learn something valuable and gain more respect for yourself in the process, then nothing was ever a waste of your time.

Wisdom comes from growth & growth is painful, but the outcome is always beautiful…

Fast forward a few months and I had the opportunity to accept a temporary job helping to serve my community. I was never one to believe that when one door closed another would open. That’s how doors work, right? However, great things happen sometimes when we least expect it. I am grateful for the friendships I made and the knowledge I gained which helped make it worth the sad parting goodbye as my contract came to a close this past week.

What can seem like a bitter year end is all in how you choose to look at it, and I choose to see the positive in my life every chance I can. This year has many of them.

I gained new friends to share laughs with and silly inside jokes.

I gained a new respect for our emergency first responders and the trauma they encounter on a daily basis.

I learned it’s okay when people walk out of your life, because it leaves room for better people to walk in.

I forgive myself more when I fall short and allow myself grace to improve in my weak areas.

I learned just because other people are bitter and spiteful doesn’t mean you have to participate.

I learned that when people say hurtful things that aren’t true about you that it shows their true character and not yours.

I learned to be okay with people not knowing my side of the story.

I learned that forgiving others is never for them, it is always for you.

I learned that not everyone is your friend and its okay to remove toxic people from your life.

I learned that not everyone is going to like me and to stop forcing things that aren’t meant to be.

I learned that some of the most unlikely people turn out to be the ones who care the most.

I learned that there are no shortcuts in life, but consistency will help get you there quicker.

I learned that if you want something bad enough you will find a way to make it happen and not an excuse.

I learned that everyone falls short and there are no perfect people and that most of us are all in this life trying the very best we can.

vernon-raineil-cenzon-vLF2n8fiFPY-unsplash

No matter what this year took you through, I pray you find peace in knowing that you are not alone and you are loved.

As I close this yearly chapter of my life and prepare for the next one, I realize that even though I have lost jobs, friendships and experienced heartache along the way, I am blessed to have woken up this morning and given the chance to be a better mother, wife and human being and that is priceless.

Tomorrow is never promised and today is a gift. Life is a journey and a roller coaster at that. So enjoy the ride and make the most of it!

Welcome 2020! Here’s to the next decade!

30 Life Lessons I Learned By 30

I turn 30 in three weeks from today and boy have I learned a lot of things in these (almost) 30 years! Mostly, lessons learned the hard way. Is there any other way? (((sigh)))

I can tell you though that many of these lessons often came with huge beneficial gains for me mentally, physically and spiritually. Yet, sadly, sometimes it took learning some hard lessons more than once to really grasp the calamity of it all.

However, as I am quickly approaching thirty and getting ready to leave my twenties behind, I find it’s the perfect opportunity to reflect on who I am as a person and just how far I have come from that young woman who entered into her twenties a decade ago.

So many lessons learned over these past three decades that I have been blessed to be alive, but in the spirit of “30”, here are thirty life lessons that really made a difference in who I am today and might help you going through something similar at your current stage in life.

1.) It’s okay to say no  – Those who truly respect and love you will understand.

2.) Get to know the real you – Take time to get to know who you really are. What are your likes, dislikes, goals, dreams. Not just what everyone else is doing. You do you! Trust me, it will pay off!

3.) You cannot make everyone happy – Trying to do so will only bring yourself misery. Not everyone will like you. They aren’t supposed to, and that’s okay!

4.) Having boundaries does not make you bad – It’s quite healthy and necessary and those who have issues with your boundaries do not respect you.

5.) Stand up for yourself – No one else can do it for you and if it costs you certain friendships, jobs or opportunities, then they weren’t worth your peace or your time to begin with.

6.) Forgive others – It’s not for them anyways, its for you and your peace!

7.) Don’t participate in toxic relationships – People will only treat you to the extent of how far you allow them. True friendships and relationships are mutually funded.

8.) Perfection does not exist – Trying to keep up with the Jones’s will only be a waste of your own good life. No one is perfect!

9.) True happiness is not found in material things – Having a nice house and a flashy car is wonderful, but don’t let your self-worth get wrapped up in what big or small material items that you do or do not possess.

10.) Change is inevitable – You can either embrace it or fight it, but change will come regardless and sometimes it can be a beautiful thing!

toa-heftiba-274947-unsplash (1)

11.) Be the bigger person – You cannot make everyone see your side of things or your perspective, whether right or wrong. Make peace with it and move on.

12.) Everyone makes mistakes – It’s part of life to make mistakes, but learning from them is a choice.

13.) Invest in your skin – Sure, a tan looks great, but healthy skin looks better! Invest in a proper day and night skin care regimen and your body will thank you for it.

14.) Diet & exercise do matter – Never underestimate how important diet and exercise can be for your health. Although, great for your body, it’s also beneficial to your mind.

15.) Sleep, sleep, sleep – As a life long insomniac this has been a hard lesson for me. Sleep is one of the most crucially important tools in your life and also one of which that controls many more mental and physical functions to boot. So, get that rest! Zzzzz…

16.) Knowledge is power – I say this with absolute humble intention. Reading is not something to do when you’re “bored”. Learning is crucial to your mental development. You’re never too old to learn something new. Now, get out there and explore!

17.) Do not conform – You were born to stand out with your own unique talents. Embrace them! Show your gifts to the world and inspire others to do the same.

18.) Not everyone is your friend – Not everyone who says they’re your friend is truly your friend. Some people seek only to bring you down to elevate themselves and weeding them out can sometimes be a heartbreaking but necessary experience in life.

19.) You cannot control everything –  Go ahead and give up that fantasy notion on being able to control every outcome. Learning to accept things in life especially difficult things is a hard but necessary life experience that everyone has to go through. Take what you learned from that experience and use it to your advantage the next time you’re approached with a similar opportunity and you will be all the wiser for it.

20.) Enjoy the little/simple things in life – It really is those simple moments in life that you will look back on and remember. Not that expensive purchase you made or that big promotion. It’s almost always a special dinner reservation with your significant other or family member. Or a simple and totally unexpected gift you will always cherish not because of its monetary worth, but the intrinsic value in which it holds! No one has ever been able to put a price on something I hold dear with sentimental value.

StockSnap_6MXV3V5XMD.jpg

21.) Stop planning and just do itAnother hard lesson for me being the natural planner that I am and my love to make a map and list for everything, is just do it! Sometimes you simply can’t plan for everything and coming to terms with this can eliminate your need for control and devastation when the outcome isn’t as you expected. Life is passing you by minute by minute, make the most of it and just do it!

22.) Make peace with your past – Everyone has a past and everyone has things in their past that they may not be particularly proud of. Forgive yourself for not knowing better at the time. You had to have lived what you did in order to know what you do now.

23.) Laugh every chance you get – Life is too short to be anything less than happy. Laugh as often as you can. Experience the silly and free side of life. It costs nothing to laugh and its good for your soul.

24.) Take pictures, but don’t forget to live in the moment – It’s important for me as a mother to capture pictures and video of my children every chance I get. Literally to the point of them thinking, oh my gosh another picture. It’s also equally important for you to be a part of those memories with your children or friends and family. So snap your pic if you must, but then join the fun!

25.) True character always reveals itself – People will always show you who they really are. Just pay attention to how they treat you or respond to you. If they’re always tearing you down to lift their own ego or agenda, then they’re toxic and need to go!

26.) Respect is earned –  This may conflict with some peoples standards, but for me respect is earned. I will respect someones good heart and hard work in life, but to truly respect someone is more than just a word. It’s also a mutually invested concept and feeling. Example: Would you automatically respect someone who held no regard or respect for you? Of course not! My point exactly. Respect. Is. Earned.

27.) Take the risk and go for it – Apply for that job you’ve always wanted or better yet become your own boss if that’s your dream. You will never get anywhere in life if you just sit on the sidelines doing nothing and being scared of what could go wrong. Go for it!

28.) Be yourself –  Be the true authentic version of yourself. Let others get to know the fun, quirky, creative and amazing person that you are. Those flaws that you may be so insecure over may inspire others to have the needed confidence to reach out and inspire someone else as well. Be yourself! Everyone else is already taken. You are the only you and that is your power!

29.) Don’t take criticism to heart – Especially from those who mean it to harm you or try and belittle you. The issue doesn’t lie with you, it’s their insecurities they need to deal with. Show them kindness and compassion and do not respond with ill intentions. Throwing gas on a fire has never solved anything. Take the high road!

30.) Do accept constructive criticism from the wise – It took me many years of having to do things “my way” and failing over and over before realizing that there are some people who truly have your best interest at heart and have only good intentions with helping you by sharing their wisdom and insight on lessons they too learned after many failed attempts in their own lives.
